Evo Stil League Southern Division One Central
Daventry Town 2 Burnham 1
As Burnham drove out of Communications Park they could justifiably feel hard done by as they took the game to Daventry for all of the first half of this exciting Evostik League encounter, but they paid the price for missing many chances that their exciting play created in the first 45 minutes.
However despite being on top Burnham went one down after 29 minutes when a miskick by Ryan Bird let in Claudiu Hoban to round Jamie Jackson in the Burnham goal. Before this Burnham were justifiably aggrieved when Ashley Smith, who was causing the home defence considerable trouble, went down in the box after a fair challenge only to be pulled down by the defenders hand around his ankle as he got up to chase the loose ball. After considerable protest Chris Elseford earned himself a booking.
Craig Henney missed the best of numerous chances that Burnham created when with only a goalkeeper in no mans land to beat, his lob went well over the bar.
In the last minute of the first half Lewis Cook shot from outside the area into the far corner of the net to level the scores with a fine, well placed goal.
Burnham started the second half well initially, Ashley Smith twice narrowly missing from well placed lobs over a goalkeeper who often strayed too far from his line. Gradually tho' Daventry got back into the game and on top although a superb move by Burnham down their right flack ended in a cross which was met by Leigh Mason with a diving header which went just past the post with goalkeeper Bevan well beaten.
After 77 minutes disaster struck for Burnham as Adam Confael broke clear on the left and was brought down by Jamie Jackson to give Daventry a penalty from which Confael himself scored.
For the remainder of the game Burnham pressed hard, hitting the post in the final minutes with Daventry desperately clearing their lines at times.
Despite the result this was a good performance by a new Burnham side who played some attractive football but paid the penalty for not converting the numerous chances created into goals.
